Only after my work enters a new phase am I able to see why the last one was necessary. Lately I see my paintings entering a new stage. I can more easily eliminate the representational image, while still requiring it as my reference, and core of my inspiration: the tension evoked by shape against shape, color against color, light against dark, and relationships of sizes to one another. Each stroke and decision is a response to a previous one. In the painting process I am reacting-to rather than depicting. I have grown through this direct, immediate response, method. Artist, Moshe Rosenthalis described this process: The quiver of paint at the touch of a brush. The longer a painting sits in my studio, the more I change it. A piece is finished only when it is time to show it or move it to a new owner. Otherwise, it continues to be in transition, layer upon layer of reacting to the subject image as well as the painted surface itself.
